Do You Need a Launch Monitor Subscription?
The sticker price is not always the real price. Some units gate their best features behind a fee.
A launch monitor's price tag can be misleading. Several popular units are cheap up front but charge an annual fee to unlock full data, simulator play, or course libraries. Others charge nothing beyond the hardware. Knowing which is which changes the real cost of ownership.
Why some units charge
Subscriptions typically pay for cloud features, simulator software, course access, and ongoing app development. For a unit you will use several times a week, a fee can be worth it. For occasional range work, it may be dead weight.
What to check before you buy
- Is the core shot data free, or locked behind a subscription?
- Does simulator / course play require an ongoing fee, and how much per year?
- Is the fee one-time, annual, or per-device?
- Can you use the unit fully with a free app if you skip the subscription?
How to compare honestly
Add two to three years of subscription cost to the hardware price and compare that number, not the sticker. A unit that is $700 up front with a $200/year fee costs more over three years than a $1,000 unit with no fee. Every product page in the archive lists the subscription so you can do this math before you buy.
